The usual way to state the puzzle is cosmic bookkeeping: the Big Bang should have made matter and antimatter in equal measure, they should have annihilated to nothing but light, and yet here is a universe full of atoms. Stated that way it is a coincidence in need of a mechanism. The framework states it the other way around. A perfectly symmetric universe annihilates to featureless radiation, and featureless radiation carries no persistent self/non-self boundary — nothing that could close a loop, hold a memory, or count as an observer. So the asymmetry is not a lucky accident the theory has to explain after the fact. It is entailed the moment anything persists across interactions at all — and, as the framework reads it, the alternative is not a differently arranged universe but no persistent structure whatsoever. This essay traces what the framework’s derivations already establish, and reads them through that inversion.
The Question, Reframed
“Why is there something rather than nothing?” is the version that gets asked. But the physical alternative to our universe was never literal nothing — it was a universe of pure radiation, matter and antimatter having cancelled exactly. That is the framework’s real “nothing”: not empty, but structureless. A photon gas is maximally scale-free and maximally featureless; it has energy but no standing pattern, no closed loop that persists from one moment to the next. It is the thermal death that the emptiest state would be.
An observer, in this framework, is exactly the kind of thing radiation cannot contain: a closed loop with a conserved winding, a boundary that separates self from non-self, a pattern that survives its own period. But nothing so elaborate has to be assumed at the outset. The framework’s premise is only that some invariant persists across interactions — the barest thing that could count as observable — and from that single premise the operational definitions instantiate the entire derivation chain. Matter asymmetry is not a second wish laid alongside “let there be observers”; it is one of the things that chain forces. So the interesting question is no longer whether the universe tilts toward matter, but whether persistence of any invariant already fixes the tilt — and, in the framework’s reading, it does.
Asymmetry Is Not Optional
Any matter excess requires the three Sakharov conditions: a process that violates baryon number, a difference between the laws for matter and antimatter (C and CP violation), and a departure from thermal equilibrium. The framework’s claim is that all three are not extra ingredients but structural consequences already sitting in the derivation chain. Baryon-number violation comes from the topology of the weak interaction — the same quaternionic structure that gives SU(2) its sphalerons. Departure from equilibrium comes from the sequential crystallization of the bootstrap hierarchy, a cosmological phase transition rather than a tuned initial condition.
The CP-violation link is the one worth dwelling on, because it reaches further back than particle physics usually allows. CP violation in the Standard Model requires at least three generations of fermions — two would leave the mixing matrix real and the laws matter–antimatter symmetric. And the framework derives exactly three generations from the three dimensions of space: winding loops live in SO(3), whose three independent axes fix the generation count. The chain runs
three spatial dimensions → three fermion generations → CP violation → a matter surplus.
Read forward, that is a startling statement: the existence of matter is traced to the dimensionality of space through a fully derived logical chain, with no free parameter inserted along the way. In a two-dimensional world there would be one generation, no CP violation, and perfect matter–antimatter symmetry — a radiation universe with nothing in it that persists. The number of dimensions an observer projects is not cosmetic; it is upstream of whether the universe it lives in can hold matter at all.
The Shortfall and Its Repair
Establishing that the asymmetry must be nonzero is not the same as producing enough of it. Here the framework is honest about a gap it shares with every Standard Model account: CP violation from the quark mixing matrix alone falls short of the observed baryon-to-photon ratio, ηB ~ 6×10−10, by roughly eight orders of magnitude. The quark sector proves the sign of the effect; it cannot supply the size.
The repair comes from the lepton sector, and it is where the framework’s neutrino results pay off. Because the fundamental representation of SU(2)L is pseudo-real, a neutral fermion’s winding can be self-conjugate: neutrinos are Majorana, their own antiparticles, with a seesaw partner pinned not at a grand-unification scale but at the electroweak scale, MR ~ 102–103 GeV. Heavy Majorana neutrinos in that compressed window decay asymmetrically into leptons and antileptons through the CP phases of the neutrino mixing matrix, and the near-degeneracy resonantly enhances the effect. The same sphaleron transitions that violated baryon number then convert the lepton asymmetry into a baryon asymmetry, with the electroweak conversion factor 28/79. The result is resonant leptogenesis that comfortably reaches the observed value — a matter excess sourced by the very particles whose Majorana nature the framework had already forced on other grounds.
There is an economy worth naming here. The matter of the universe is not explained by adding machinery. It is explained by cashing in structure the framework needed anyway: three generations from three dimensions, Majorana neutrinos from pseudo-reality, sphalerons from weak-force topology, phase transitions from the bootstrap. Each piece was on the books before the question of matter was posed.
What Matter Is, in This Frame
Underneath the cosmology sits a plainer picture of what “matter” even is. A particle is a closed observer loop carrying a conserved winding charge; its antiparticle is the loop’s image under the coherence-dual map, which reverses the winding while preserving the axis. Annihilation is two dual loops closing into each other and releasing their coherence as radiation — the return of standing pattern to featureless light. A matter-dominated universe is therefore one left holding a surplus of loops with no dual to cancel against: unpaired persistence, the raw material of anything that can be an observer.
This is why the framework cannot treat the asymmetry as a detail. In its vocabulary, “matter” and “persistent structure” and “the possibility of an observer” are three names for the same surplus. The reason there is something to exist in the ontic sense — something that persists, holds a boundary, and refers to itself — is precisely that the loops did not all pair off and vanish into light. Matter is what is left over when annihilation runs out of partners, and observers are what that leftover can be arranged into.
What the Framework Does Not Claim
The honesty has to be kept in view. The derivations establish that the asymmetry is forced to be nonzero and that a viable mechanism reaches the observed magnitude; they do not yet pin a unique predicted value for ηB. The result depends on the heavy-neutrino mass splittings, which the framework constrains but does not fully determine, so the claim is “the observed asymmetry lies inside the accessible parameter space,” not “the asymmetry had to be this exact number.” Nor does the observer-centric reading do any work the physics does not already do — it is a reframing of a derived result, not an extra argument. And it is specifically not the anthropic one. The anthropic claim is a selection effect: among many ways a universe could be, we necessarily find ourselves in one that permits observers, and the matter surplus is the luck that survived the filter. The framework’s claim runs the other way and needs no ensemble. It does not pick our universe out of alternatives; it holds that the alternative to a universe like ours is not a differently tuned world we happen to be absent from, but no persistent invariant at all — non-existence as totality. The tilt toward matter is not the lucky survivor of a selection. It is what already follows once anything persists across interactions: the live distinction is existence at all, as against nothing, and on the existence side the chain that ends in a matter-dominated universe has already begun.
