An Appreciation
Before anything else: a deep appreciation for the tradition this work attempts to honor.
The sheer audacity of science — the assumption that the world is explicable, followed by millennia of brute-force determination to make good on that assumption — is one of the most remarkable things human beings have done. Uncountable contributions from curious minds, some recognized and many not, have built a body of knowledge whose precision inspires almost as much awe as nature itself. Twelve decimal places for the electron's magnetic moment. Gravitational waves detected from colliding black holes a billion light-years away. A particle zoo predicted by symmetry arguments and confirmed, one by one, by experiment.
Observer-Centrism attempts to honor and respect this tradition — not to undermine or corrupt it with unfounded, unscientific, or indefensible claims. Everything on this site is offered in that spirit: as a contribution to the ongoing work, subject to the same standards of evidence and rigor that the tradition demands.
The Question
The question at the origin of this framework is not unique or particularly hidden. Almost every serious thinker has spent some portion of their journey into science pondering it:
How do observers fit into what we experience?
This is both deceptively simple and incredibly difficult. When we think about "observers," we can't help but start with ourselves — conscious beings who experience the world. We might then extend the concept outward: animals, measuring devices, perhaps thermostats. But we start with ourselves, and the most obvious, most mysterious quality that defines "us" is consciousness.
This creates an uncomfortable question: if "we" are observers, and the defining quality of "us" is consciousness, does observation have an intrinsic link to consciousness?
Without a clear answer, any attempt to resolve the observer-dependent problems in physics — the measurement problem in quantum mechanics, the reference frame dependence in relativity, the coarse-graining dependence in thermodynamics — feels like admitting that science is inseparable from philosophy. Or at minimum, that one of the most intractable problems we've encountered must be solved before science can claim the rigor it demands of itself.
Most physicists, reasonably, set the question aside and get on with the work. The problems are real, but they're manageable. You can do quantum mechanics without solving the measurement problem. You can do general relativity without defining what makes a reference frame physical. You can do thermodynamics without specifying who is doing the coarse-graining. The gap is acknowledged and then politely ignored.
The Attempt
Observer-Centrism started as an unassuming attempt to see whether observers could be defined in a way that was rigorous enough for physics and yet completely free of any link to consciousness.
There were no grand hopes. At most, the exercise was expected to clarify this author's own understanding of different entropy concepts. There was certainly no goal or desire to create an entire scientific framework. It was just a question that seemed worth pursuing to its natural conclusion.
So a non-mystical, purely structural observer definition was attempted, and refined over time. The current form is grounded in an operational definition of what it means to observe: to interact with a separate system in a way that updates the observing system's state without destroying it in the process. Observation is the residue of interaction, remembered.
From that definition of observation, a definition for observer follows: a system that has an identity, participates in interactions, and maintains its identity through those interactions.
When it became clear that this definition was operationally complete — that it captured what it means to observe without any reference to consciousness, awareness, intelligence, or subjective experience — the next step was to see whether the definition could be encoded into a minimal set of axioms: the smallest set of rules that would allow such systems to exist.
The result is the three axioms. We believe they are both necessary and sufficient to encapsulate the observer definition that was formed. Which forced the next natural question: what is implied if you take these three axioms, and nothing else, as holding true?
Again — no grand hopes, no pre-existing expectations that anything significant would come from the exercise. It simply demanded to be done.
What Happened
What happened is the framework you see here.
From the three axioms, a chain of derivations emerged that was not planned and not forced: quantum mechanics, general relativity, the Standard Model gauge group, the particle spectrum, holographic entropy bounds, the cosmological constant's sign, the generation count, and more. Not all of it has reached derived status — the site is transparent about its status, its assumptions, and its gaps. But the scope of what three structural rules about observers appear to imply was, and remains, genuinely surprising.
Nothing was planned. Nothing was forced. Just the result of asking a single question and pulling the threads until they stopped.
